HAY, how art you? I decided to start a creative scrapbook journal using the MD B6 slim notebook. It is a great size that is not as stressful to fill up as an A5 notebook, but big enough to create intricate spreads. In this notebook, I intend to collage, use up scraps and ephemera, and get creative with all kinds of spread ideas. In this article, I’ll be sharing the first three scrapbook journal ideas that I have used in my new notebook. If you are looking for journaling inspiration, keep reading!

I first came across the idea of a blackout poem (or prose) from Austin Kleon, author of bestselling books “Show Your Work” and “Steal Like an Artist”. To create a unique piece of your own, find any material with a chunk of text. You can use thrifted books, newspapers, magazines, flyers, etc; the possibilities are endless.
Once you have your material ready, and a black marker on hand, proceed to blackout parts of the text until the remaining text forms a meaningful poem or prose. It took a while for me to find suitable passages to this, but I find it such a great exercise for patience and creativity!
For this idea, combine a variety of shapes to create a unique composition. I opted for rounded, blobby shapes that resemble pebbles cut out from brown textured papers. Also, I included a paper that has Japanese text printed to create more interest in the composition. I love the final collage which evokes feelings of a Japanese zen garden.
The third and final idea in this article is to create a plant gallery. To create this spread, I used stamps of various frames as well as PET stickers of leaves and ferns. I would have loved to use real dried leaves and flowers, but I did not have any on hand. However, I’m definitely saving that idea for a future journal spread!
